Tips for Power Washing

We have shared other posts with general knowledge on power washing, but thought that this recent article we found is a good quick read. If you have more questions on a specific power washing application, our staff is here to help. Call or stop by our 6,000 square foot facility located at:

If you are starting to spend more time outside or you are preparing to sell your home, you may start to notice the layer of grime on your home or decking. To save time and energy, power washing might be a good option. Matt McMillan of Greenfield, MA has worked in contracting and construction for over 25 years and offers up some helpful tips. McMillan suggested renting a power washer instead of buying. “You don’t usually use a power washer that many times a year,” he said. Most towns and cites have hardware stores that rent power washers.

McMillan emphasized the importance of safety when operating a power washer. “It may sound foolish, but wearing safety glasses is important,” he said. He also suggested wearing gloves and never using a power washer on a ladder of any size. McMillan told the story of a friend who recently got a hose caught in the ladder he was on while power washing his home. His friend fell from the ladder and is now a paraplegic. In 1995, a San-Francisco-area painting contractor impaled himself on his pressure washer wand when he fell off a ladder. “Wash everything from the ground. If you can’t do the job from the ground, hire a professional,” said McMillan.

What can and can’t you wash with a power washer?
McMillan said that most people just want to get the layer of grime off of their home or clean off mold and mildew. “You can also use a power washer to get off loose paint or clean out cobwebs that are stuck in places you can’t really brush out,” he said.

McMillan added that a power washer can be used to clean any exterior that is wood, vinyl, concrete, or asphalt. “But no windows or shrubbery,” he said. McMillan said that it’s important to understand how powerful a power washer is, and to be especially careful with wood. “With a fine-point nozzle (on a power washer), you can basically write your name in the wood with it,” he said.

Using a power washer
McMillan said that there are usually four different sizes of nozzles for power washers. He recommends that you experiment and “work your way up” to see which size nozzle would be best for the cleaning job you are doing. “For example, if you use too strong a water stream, you can really damage vinyl,” he said.

There are a number of detergents that can be added to the water for an easier cleaning job. McMillan said that in most cases a weak solution of bleach works just fine.

Types of power washers
There are two different ways to power a power washer. One type is fueled by natural gas, propane, kerosene, etc. The advantage to fuel-powered equipment is more mobility. The downside is that they are noisier and create fumes, so you need to take care to have enough ventilation where you are using the power washer.

The second type is an electric power washer. The pluses are less noise and no fumes. However, you need an outlet and you have less mobility.

Hot vs. cold water power washers
Cold water washers are good for simple dirt-cleaning projects on decks, porches, driveways, siding, etc.

Hot water washers are better if you are trying to clean off oils or any greasy/sticky material. Keep in mind, the water in a hot water power washer can heat up to 200 degrees.

General terms relating to power washers
GPM means gallons per minute, or how much water will flow over a period of time. The greater the flow rate, the faster the cleaning time.

PSI means pounds per square inch, or the amount of pressure created per square inch. Greater PSI means greater efficiency.

Water Filtration Applications in a Food and Beverage Facility

In a typical Food and Beverage facility there are many different water and process applications, each demanding its own specific level of water purity. The presence, flows and purity of each of these streams is driven by the Food and Beverage plant design, e.g. canning, dry-goods, soft-drink, brewery.
These can include:

• Pre-treatment of well, surface or city water
• Boiler water treatment
• Condensate treatment
• Process water treatment
• Cleaning and sterilization service water
• Hygiene Services
• Waste water disposal.
Regardless of the application, there is a good chance that some type of industrial water filtration will be required in order for the Food and Beverage application to operate at its peak efficiency.
Defining the Types of Water Filtration Systems

Water filtration options can be divided into two major categories, based upon the filtering media used; granular and membrane.
Granular water filtration has been used for many decades in the Food and Beverage Industry, and will be familiar to most. Examples of granular media filtration include sand filters; activated carbon filters for taste, odor, and chlorine removal; anthracite filters; and fine garnet filters.
These types of filters can remove suspended particles down to about 10 microns in diameter (1 micron = 10-6 meters). With the use of certain coagulant or flocculation polymers fed prior to these filters (fed as filter aids), some success has been seen in the removal of particles down to almost 1 micron.
The spacing between the discrete filtering media particles serves as the pores. Suspended solids trapped out by these filters will be collected on top of the filtration media bed, or within the pores.
Membrane water filtration uses membranes to remove suspended particles. Unlike granular filters, the membranes are designed with pores and are capable of removing much smaller particles. The ultimate membrane filtration is reverse osmosis (RO), where dissolved solids (metal ions) can be removed. This is not really a filtration mechanism in the truest sense of the words, as the semi-permeable membranes used in RO do not have pores. It is more properly thought of as a demineralization mechanism.
Membrane water filtration is best characterized by the size range of the filterable particles, as follows:
1. Microfiltration(MF) can include woven or wound depth-type cartridge filters, or true membrane filters. Can remove particles from about 0.1 micron to over 1 micron.
2. Ultrafiltration (UF) can remove particles from below 0.01 microns to over 0.1 microns. Can remove some large molecular weight organic dissolved material.
3. Nanofiltration(NF) can remove particles from below 0.001 microns to 0.01 microns. Can remove smaller molecular weight organics.
4. RO can remove particles from 0.0001 microns to 0.001 microns. Can also remove DISSOLVED IONIC SOLIDS.

Coil Cleaning Can Improve Your AC Unit’s Energy Efficiency by 30%

The best way to waste money this summer was letting the coil in our AC units in our homes, businesses, and cars get clogged with dust, pollen and pollution.

Many people don’t realize the importance of  keeping a clean unit. This results in unnecessarily high energy bills as well as discomfort. Why not have our appliances -specially one as important as our cooling systems-  work a their peak performance?  Needless to say, here in Az our AC units are a necessity.

Is important to remeber that Clean filters and coils are the most cost effective way to save energy. “Dirty coils can actually reduce the energy efficiency of a cooling system by 30 percent,” says the owner of an AC maintenance company in business since 1994.

One of the benefits of owning or renting a pressure washer is the amount of improvement jobs you can do for your property, coil cleaning is among these.

Coil Cleaning, the important ingredients are: a Hotsy industrial degreaser and a Hotsy hot water pressure washer. You can then use almost any size or power of a HOT water pressure washer with a nozzle of 15 or 45 degrees.

The fact is that you probably only need about 1500 to 2000 psi with hot water and degreaser to remove the dust, pollen and pollution from the coil. Though a hose and a brush may do the job, a power washer will greatly reduce the time and effort.

Make sure to disconnect your appliance before you begin working. Carefully open the unit and clean the debris around and inside the unit.

Carefully, and in the direction of the coils, spray from the inside out, and from top to bottom; Allowing for water to flow out as you go, to avoid flooding the inside of the unit.

The next step is to carefully apply the industrial degreaser, let sit, and spray again to remove the rest of the soil.

Note: Always read the safety precautions that come with you appliance. Turn off your units before cleaning or maintenance.

Car Wash Installation

We recently installed a Hotsy car wash system for our friends at Enterprise Rent_A_CarⓇ at the Mesa Gateway Airport. We are really proud about this project since we know that the investment and planning will really pay off.

How indispensable is to have a  solid piece of equipment that will help you improve your business.

To have a car wash system on site, speeds up the process of maintaining your vehicles. At the same time, it gives you the possibility of monitoring and moderating  the amount of waste water that your franchise generates.

These costumers were surely satisfied with the installation. They are already saving!

Along with the basic set up, we can hook you up with other environmentally-conscious articles such as our best-seller, The Vacu-Boom.

This, portable dam and vacuum system,  Collects the spent wash water then  pumps water to a tank or to a recycle filter system. Don’t forget to ask about our other filtration and purification systems.

We also offer Hotsy Transportation Detergents that are specially formulated for use on cars, trucks, and heavy equipment of all types. Industrial-strength, Hotsy transportation and vehicle detergents are concentrated, biodegradable, and are formulated to use with either a hot or cold-water pressure washer.*
