Water Filtration Applications in a Food and Beverage Facility

In a typical Food and Beverage facility there are many different water and process applications, each demanding its own specific level of water purity. The presence, flows and purity of each of these streams is driven by the Food and Beverage plant design, e.g. canning, dry-goods, soft-drink, brewery.
These can include:

• Pre-treatment of well, surface or city water
• Boiler water treatment
• Condensate treatment
• Process water treatment
• Cleaning and sterilization service water
• Hygiene Services
• Waste water disposal.
Regardless of the application, there is a good chance that some type of industrial water filtration will be required in order for the Food and Beverage application to operate at its peak efficiency.
Defining the Types of Water Filtration Systems

Water filtration options can be divided into two major categories, based upon the filtering media used; granular and membrane.
Granular water filtration has been used for many decades in the Food and Beverage Industry, and will be familiar to most. Examples of granular media filtration include sand filters; activated carbon filters for taste, odor, and chlorine removal; anthracite filters; and fine garnet filters.
These types of filters can remove suspended particles down to about 10 microns in diameter (1 micron = 10-6 meters). With the use of certain coagulant or flocculation polymers fed prior to these filters (fed as filter aids), some success has been seen in the removal of particles down to almost 1 micron.
The spacing between the discrete filtering media particles serves as the pores. Suspended solids trapped out by these filters will be collected on top of the filtration media bed, or within the pores.
Membrane water filtration uses membranes to remove suspended particles. Unlike granular filters, the membranes are designed with pores and are capable of removing much smaller particles. The ultimate membrane filtration is reverse osmosis (RO), where dissolved solids (metal ions) can be removed. This is not really a filtration mechanism in the truest sense of the words, as the semi-permeable membranes used in RO do not have pores. It is more properly thought of as a demineralization mechanism.
Membrane water filtration is best characterized by the size range of the filterable particles, as follows:
1. Microfiltration(MF) can include woven or wound depth-type cartridge filters, or true membrane filters. Can remove particles from about 0.1 micron to over 1 micron.
2. Ultrafiltration (UF) can remove particles from below 0.01 microns to over 0.1 microns. Can remove some large molecular weight organic dissolved material.
3. Nanofiltration(NF) can remove particles from below 0.001 microns to 0.01 microns. Can remove smaller molecular weight organics.
4. RO can remove particles from 0.0001 microns to 0.001 microns. Can also remove DISSOLVED IONIC SOLIDS.

Coil Cleaning Can Improve Your AC Unit’s Energy Efficiency by 30%

The best way to waste money this summer was letting the coil in our AC units in our homes, businesses, and cars get clogged with dust, pollen and pollution.

Many people don’t realize the importance of  keeping a clean unit. This results in unnecessarily high energy bills as well as discomfort. Why not have our appliances -specially one as important as our cooling systems-  work a their peak performance?  Needless to say, here in Az our AC units are a necessity.

Is important to remeber that Clean filters and coils are the most cost effective way to save energy. “Dirty coils can actually reduce the energy efficiency of a cooling system by 30 percent,” says the owner of RichAir.com an AC maintenance company in business since 1994.

One of the benefits of owning or renting a pressure washer is the amount of improvement jobs you can do for your property, coil cleaning is among these.

dirty-coil

Coil Cleaning, the important ingredients are: a Hotsy industrial degreaser and a Hotsy hot water pressure washer. You can then use almost any size or power of a HOT water pressure washer with a nozzle of 15 or 45 degrees.

The fact is that you probably only need about 1500 to 2000 psi with hot water and degreaser to remove the dust, pollen and pollution from the coil. Though a hose and a brush may do the job, a power washer will greatly reduce the time and effort.

sootclean1

Make sure to disconnect your appliance before you begin working. Carefully open the unit and clean the debris around and inside the unit.

Carefully, and in the direction of the coils, spray from the inside out, and from top to bottom; Allowing for water to flow out as you go, to avoid flooding the inside of the unit.

The next step is to carefully apply the industrial degreaser, let sit, and spray again to remove the rest of the soil.

Note: Always read the safety precautions that come with you appliance. Turn off your units before cleaning or maintenance.

Car Wash Installation

We recently installed a Hotsy car wash system for our friends at Enterprise Rent_A_CarⓇ at the Mesa Gateway Airport. We are really proud about this project since we know that the investment and planning will really pay off.

How indispensable is to have a  solid piece of equipment that will help you improve your business.

dsci0003-5

To have a car wash system on site, speeds up the process of maintaining your vehicles. At the same time, it gives you the possibility of monitoring and moderating  the amount of waste water that your franchise generates.

Cleaning your Roof with a Pressure Washer

The year is almost over and we need to begin to think about what we are going to improve in our lives. Many say New Year’s resolutions are overrated. But, the way I see it,  is if we don’t set our mind to do something at this point, then when will we do it? After all, we need to generate cash for the next holiday season- and everything in between now and then.

Once you get something done during the first season, you become motivated throughout the whole year.

so, I was also thinking: why not let that be a project that you enjoy, that you feel proud about? Something that takes energy and requires interaction.

Wouldn’t that be nice?

How about a trip to our store with your teenage son -or even daughter- and you and I talk about pressure washers and which one is best for your roof.

Here is an article that a good friend sent me. I hope it’s useful to you.

We put the best tools at your service.

Washing Your Roof With A Pressure Washer

by Scott Rodgers

A disorderly state of your roof not only hampers the normal
functioning of roofing setup but also hurts the serenity of
the entire home. When it is about beautifying your home, the
roofs deserve a quintessential attention.

When it comes to ensuring a serene look to your home, the
roofs often are neglected. Considering the fact that roofs
are exposed to dust, air and water on a constant basis,
their sanitation is not prioritized by the homeowners.
However, it is quite accepted that roofs are an integral
part of your home architecture.

front-21You can take one of the two ways to wash your roof entirely.
Either you can clean off the roof surface with a broom and a
bucket of water or you can pressure wash the roof. Pressure
washing the roof saves you a lot of time whereas the manual
wash does the job with no financial involvement. A washer
apparatus has to be bought from a hardware store to pressure
wash the roof. If you’re constrained by money then you can
rent the concerned equipment. Derive any possible
recommendation from the salesperson regarding the pressure
of the machine. Generally, a pressure of about 1500-2000
pounds per square is required for the operation.

Take a regular-sized hose pipe and connect its tail to a
source of water supply. Screw the other end to the pressure
washer you just brought in. Render normal supply to the
apparatus by turning on the water control valve of the
concerned source.

Insert the plug of the equipment into the associated socket
and trigger the operation of the apparatus. Switch on the
washer and wait for the water to gush out of the mouth of
the pipe.

Pull the trigger of the washer and direct the flow of water
to the roof. Remember that water gushes out of the washer
mouth with great pressure and hence, handle the mouth
strongly beforehand.

stage-washMake sure that the location on which you are standing on the
roof is not too steep or saturated. If the roof appears a
bit too steep then carry out the operation from the ladder.
Make sure that the ladder is grounded firmly and doesn’t
shake or wobble. Another person could be called in to assist
you with the assignment. Cover all the areas of the roof and
render a clean look to your roof.

Ultimately, a cleaner roof of the home adds to the
beautification of the entire home.
